World reports on refugee and migrant health

A global snapshot of the health of refugees and migrants worldwide

Over one billion people are on the move today, within and across borders, whether by choice or by force. They often face heightened and intersecting health risks at every phase of displacement and migration. These risks stem from factors such as precarious legal status, discrimination, linguistic and cultural barriers, limited access to services and entitlements, or fear of detention and deportation—compounded by broader social, environmental and political determinants. Together, these contribute to persistent inequities in health outcomes when compared with host populations. Notably, refugees and migrants are essential contributors to communities and health systems, playing key roles in care, labour markets, and social cohesion.  

The World report on promoting the health of refugees and migrants: Monitoring progress on the WHO global action plan provides the first global baseline of how countries are acting on their commitments to migrant inclusive health. Drawing on the Global Survey on Health and Migration completed by 93 Member States, it examines how refugee and migrant health is being integrated into national policies, public health priorities, migration governance, development planning and universal health coverage agendas. The report finds encouraging progress, such as stronger coordination mechanisms and increased inclusion in national strategies, while also identifying persistent gaps in data systems, governance, tailored service provision and the meaningful participation of refugees and migrants in decision-making. 

The World report on the health of refugees and migrants (2022) was the first global synthesis of evidence capturing the specific health challenges and conditions shaping outcomes along the migration continuum. It highlighted fragmented data, showcased good practices across regions, and outlined opportunities for building health systems that are more inclusive, equitable and responsive to the needs of people on the move. 

Together, these reports provide a consolidated evidence base and clear direction for transforming commitments into action, embedding refugee and migrant health within the core of public health systems worldwide and advancing the goal of health for all.
